A cat that appeared to have died after being struck by a car in Tampa, Florida, turned up five days after being buried alive in a neighbor’s yard.
The cat had surgery on Tuesday, and the Humane Society Tampa Bay, where the procedure took place, stated in a statement, “We have seen many extraordinary instances at our full-service veterinary facility, but this circumstance may take the cake.”
Bart, or “zombie cat,” as the feline is now known online, was found last week by his owner “unresponsive” and laying in a pool of blood. His face was terribly deformed, and his body was frigid.
Nash McCuthchen of the Humane Society told CNN, “If we’d seen that cat on the road, we would have thought he was dead.”
Ellis Hutson, who owned Bart, and a neighbor helped him bury his beloved pet in his yard.
Five days later, another neighbor found Bart walking in her yard. It looked like he had dug himself out of the grave.
Symptom
The neighbor gave the cat back to Hutson, who then contacted the Humane Society for assistance.McCutchen said that Bart was in bad shape. He had maggots in his open wounds, and he had trouble walking. The cat was thirsty, and his left eye was damaged.
But, McCutchen said, it was amazing that the cat didn’t have any internal injuries. This meant that the Humane Society could treat him. Bart went into surgery on Wednesday to have his left eye removed and his jaw wired shut.
McCutchen remarked, “He appears to be a little warrior.
McCutchen said Bart is a very sociable and lovable cat despite all the stress of being hit by a car, being thought to be dead, and being buried alive. He enjoys being handled and purrs at guests, she claimed.
Bart is expected to heal and may be reunited with his owner as soon as next week.
