the story
Lauren and Will Powers of Ferndale, Michigan, don’t have to dust like the rest of us. Cygnus, their cat, does it for them just by wandering around and waving his extraordinarily long and fluffy tail.
The 2018 Guinness Book of World Records says that Cygnus Regulus Powers has the “longest tail on a domestic cat.” From the base of his butt to the end of the “meat” of his tail, the official measurement said it was 44.66 cm (17.58 inches) long. This must have been done a while ago, though, because, in June of last year, Cygnus’ owner Will Powers told Love Meow that Cygnus’ tail was already 18.4 inches long (24 inches if you count the fluff). And since the cute Main Coon was only about a year old at the time, his tail must be a lot longer now.

living and growing
Will Powers told Love Meow, “It’s far above the world record presently of 16.3 and showing no signs of stopping.” About half an inch of length is added to the tail every month. It’s becoming a little strange for him. Since it is so long and fluffy, he is often referred to as a “featherduster” or a “door draft blocker.”
“When he holds his tail “upright,” it usually curls around at the end and looks like a fluffy question mark,” Cygnus’s human dad said.
But even though having a living feather duster as a pet sounds great, it also brings Will and Lauren some problems. They have to be extra careful when closing doors around the house because Cygnus’s long tail could get caught. The cat also sometimes bumps into things with his long tail because it is so far away from his body.

Arcturus, the sibling of Cygnus, also broke a Guinness record this year for being the “world’s tallest domestic cat.” The F2 Savannah reaches a height of 48.4 centimeters (19.05 inches) and weighs around 14 kg. The two get along well and enjoy nothing more than playing together and cuddling.
Fun Fact
Cats use their whiskers and sensory hairs on the sides of their legs and head to help feel their way through environments in the dark.
